Ex-DBAs and making the tea

I wanted to write something about Doug Burns…

Doug’s been working at my company as a contract developer for the last few months and it’s been a real experience. He’s been ultra friendly, incredibly modest and full of useful info that he’s all too willing to share. We’ve bullied him into two presentations so far and he’s not got away yet. He’s also been really supportive on the blogging front.

One other thing I’ve come to realise is this guy LOVES to talk!

We’ve got a chat channel at work dedicated to oracle and you don’t have to ask him twice to contribute. The funniest thing though, is that he keeps insisting he’s not a DBA. He’s very keen to point out to anyone that will listen that he’s been hired as a developer and therefore any DBA type advice he gives can be taken with a pinch of salt. As get out clauses go, that’s a pretty damn fine one.

‘Yes, yes, I know I’m an internationally respected DBA that’s presented all over the world and written some of the best white papers on parallelism to be found – but please check with your dbas before following any of my advice!’– I’m paraphrasing (or plain making it up?) in a major way but you get the gist of it.

Seriously though, I know Doug’s contract is due to expire in the not too distant future and I for one will be sad to see him go. There’s been some talk of him coming back next year. If we’re really lucky he may even come back as a DBA this time!

… then again we could always do with someone to make the tea, just the one sugar in mine please Doug 🙂

STOP PRESS! – a little bird has told me that Doug may be renewing his contract to start again on 19th Oct. Looks like I’ll be making my own tea for the foreseeable future…
